Frequently asked questions about images and video in RCS
For images, JPG or PNG formats up to 10 MB per file are recommended. For video, MP4 (H.264) is supported, with a recommended maximum size of 105 MB. Animations are supported via the GIF format.
It depends on the user's operating system (iOS/Android) and network settings. Typically, a high-resolution thumbnail appears with a clear 'Play' icon that launches the video natively within the chat window when the customer taps it.
Since RCS is handled like standard data traffic (similar to iMessage or WhatsApp), it consumes the recipient's data allowance. If the user is connected to Wi-Fi, no mobile data is used.
With an external link, the customer has to leave the messaging app, wait for YouTube or the browser to load, and sometimes watch ads before your video starts. With RCS, the content is experienced immediately within the chat, without interruption or friction.
Both Google Messages and Apple Messages automatically crop and adjust the media container to fit the user's screen perfectly (responsive design). However, the file itself retains its original aspect ratio.
